Institutional-caliber advisory for collectors, artists, families, and institutions — grounded in five generations of stewardship.
Bultman Advisory was founded on the belief that collectors, artists, families, and institutions deserve more than transactional service — they deserve a partner with the depth to understand what they own, the discipline to protect it, and the vision to ensure it endures.
We bring the rigor of institutional practice to every engagement: thorough diligence, disciplined strategy, and a commitment to alignment that puts the client's long-term interest first. These principles — drawn from decades of experience across both the financial and art worlds — are not aspirational. They are how we operate.
That standard of care is inseparable from our heritage. Five generations of the Bultman family have lived at the intersection of art and stewardship — as artists, collectors, patrons, and advisors. The firm exists to carry that legacy forward, with the same conviction that guided it from the beginning: the art comes first, and stewardship is a lifelong commitment.
"We treat every collection as if it were our own — because in many ways, the principles that guide us are the same ones our family has lived by for over a century."
Tristan Bultman, FounderThe Bultman family's relationship with art spans more than 140 years — from the founding of the House of Bultman in New Orleans to the forefront of American Abstract Expressionism to the advisory practice of today.
A. Frederick Bultman Sr. establishes the House of Bultman in New Orleans, beginning the family's legacy of service and cultural stewardship in the American South. For generations, the name would become synonymous with both civic responsibility and an enduring commitment to the arts.
Devoted collectors and patrons who opened their home — the Bultman mansion in New Orleans — to artists, writers, and cultural figures. Their generosity established a family tradition of direct engagement with creative lives that continues to this day.
In 1942, Fred and Pauline hosted Tennessee Williams for three months upon his arrival in New Orleans. His time in the Bultman mansion would prove transformative for the American literary landscape — Williams later drew upon the house and its gardens as inspiration for Suddenly, Last Summer. Their son Fritz and Williams had been close friends in New York throughout the 1940s and 50s.
Fred and Pauline also welcomed the visionary Pacific Northwest artist Morris Graves as a guest in their home — a presence that proved formative on the young Fritz, deepening his sensibility and foreshadowing the Abstract Expressionist path he would later pursue.
A graduate of Newcomb College (1919), member of the Newcomb Guild, and partner of the celebrated ceramicist and printmaker Sadie Irvine. Ruth was a pioneer of Southern Art whose creative vision and dedication profoundly shaped the artistic sensibilities of both Fritz and Muriel Bultman.
Fritz Bultman emerged as a significant figure in Abstract Expressionism — one of the Irascibles, a student of Hans Hofmann in New York and Provincetown, and a close associate of Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, Tony Smith, and David Smith.
Fritz served as art advisor to his sister Muriel, together acquiring the first Jackson Pollock drip painting ever sold and among the first Dubuffets from his earliest Paris exhibitions. During the height of the Civil Rights movement, Fritz and Jeanne Bultman organized prominent New York artists and writers — including Robert Motherwell and Dore Ashton — to create a modern art collection for Tougaloo College, a historically Black institution in Mississippi, at a time when African Americans were prohibited from entering white museums in the South.
His paintings entered the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the collection of Nelson Rockefeller, among others. His work and relationships placed the Bultman family at the center of the most important American art movement of the twentieth century.
A major collector, cultural force, and pioneering businesswoman. Muriel assembled a distinguished collection of postwar and contemporary art — including early patronage of Roberto Matta, Ron Gorchov, and fashion designer Charles James, alongside works by René Magritte, Alberto Giacometti, Monet, Redon, Ingres, and Delacroix. Her gifts to The New Orleans Museum of Art became foundational to the museum’s French art holdings, a legacy that endures today.
In 1945, Muriel founded her public relations agency in New York representing classical artists including Yehudi Menuhin, Lily Pons, and André Kostelanetz — operating from a Stanford White–designed Beaux-Arts townhouse on East 65th Street. Her discerning eye, fierce independence, and commitment to artists set a standard of excellence that endures in the family today.
Johann Bultman operated the House of Bultman and served as president of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. Bethany Ewald Bultman is an author, journalist, documentary filmmaker, and cultural anthropologist who holds an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Loyola University.
Together, they co-founded the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic — a pioneering healthcare institution that has served the city's musicians and culture bearers for over twenty-five years. Their son Gwyther has carried the family's instinct for nurturing creative talent into the music industry, managing recording artists including Halestorm and Shinedown. Whether in art, music, or medicine — the Bultman commitment to stewardship of creative lives runs in the family.
Tristan Bultman founds the advisory practice, uniting five generations of art world relationships with institutional-grade strategic counsel — dedicated to the long-term stewardship of collections, estates, and legacies.
"Art is not a decoration. It is a heritage, a responsibility, and — when properly cared for — a legacy that outlasts us all."
— The Bultman Philosophy

David was a profoundly talented individual whose outsized impact on art history and artists' legacies was celebrated by the global art community. His contributions to the medium and his legacy will have far-reaching effects for many generations to come — just as he would have wanted.
His generosity was equally matched, having met him when I was just starting out in my career, he went out of his way time and time again to advance my career. As our professional relationship developed into a friendship, I got to meet many of his friends and witnessed his generosity multiplied all the while curating groundbreaking exhibitions, establishing world-renowned museums, and authoring preeminent scholarly books on some of the most important figures of American Art.
There was never a moment of time he wouldn't have spared for a friend. His light went out way too soon. It was an honor and privilege to be a colleague and an even greater blessing to call him a friend. He will be sorely missed and remembered by many.
